The tango is, at heart, a social dance that allows a harmonious way of coming together (encuentro), and the collective sharing of a space and musical experience (baile).

The objective of this summer intensive is to discover the milonguero style, to learn what’s so compelling in this way of dancing that doesn’t look spectacular but feels very intense. We will focus on the following elements:

· Posture and walking: essenial concepts of axis, weight, and balance – the keys to becoming a solidly grounded dancer;
· Close embrace technique: the quality of the connection, a dialogue;
· Floor craft and navigation: sharing the dance floor;
· Gaining a grasp of the music: listening to, and interpretating, different orchestras.

This two-week series of classes will allow us to gradually incorporate a new language, a new dynamic, perhaps deconstructing what we know, and looking for ways to feel comfortable with our bodies. We will explore the dynamics of leading and following: one guides, the other responds, both dance in a complimentary union of male and female energies. Elements that give the dance fluidity and flexibility will be revealed, allowing each dancer to bring his/her personality to the partnership, thus generating a free and creative dance.

Andrea is a tango dancer from the younger generation of milongueros. She learned at "La Academia” of Susana Miller and taught in her tango school for 4 years, together with Ana María Schapira and María Plazaola. She has also taught milonguero style at the Universidad del tango with María Plazaola. Later she worked at Carlos Gavito’s Academy. Currently, she is expanding her knowledge at the renowned Academia de Estilos de Tango (A.C.E.T.A., Academy of Tango Styles; www.aceta.com.ar), where students learn the idioms accumulated by milongueros to help preserve and transmit their cultural legacy. After having led workshops in several European cities, Andrea is visiting Canada for the first time.
