Who Is MUMA And What Does She Bring To PNW Social Tango?

Muma is a true “milonguera”, one of those who have been dancing in the Buenos Aires “milongas” since their earliest youth. She belongs to a long-established tango family, and the great exponents of this music visited her home regularly, such as: Alberto Castillo (the singer of the “one hundred porteño barrios”), and the composer and conductor Ricardo Tanturi as well as Francisco Lomuto (with whose orchestra her mother performed as a singer). Muma has came to be recognized as one of the best experts on the lively “tango picado”.

Muma had the privilege of teaching for years with one of the great milongueros, the late Ricardo Vidort. He was known for his musicality and clean step, as the great “architect of tango.” Because of her direct line to this marvelous dancer, we have the opportunity of receiving his instruction without having met him firsthand. Similarly, Muma has danced and taught with the great Dani “Flaco” Garcia, one of the living giants of the “milonga con traspié,” who taught in Seattle in recent years. She is able to convey his technique clearly and with aplomb, in her inimitable, easy-going way. She’s a relaxed, cheerful and classy woman who exemplifies the confidence and enjoyment you’ll want to bring into your tango life.

Muma brings an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of social tango and milonga, in the “Milonguero” style of close-embrace that is the predominant way of dancing in Argentina. This is a blessing for those who will travel South to dance in Buenos Aires, the cradle of tango, and for those who wish to learn more about the Argentine “social” dancing technique and apply it here in the Pacific Northwest.

Here's Muma dancing at Lo de Celia, Bs.As.

Muma and Dani "El Flaco" again:

SATURDAY October 16th
1-2.30 PM: TANGO and MILONGA FUNDAMENTALS: Stepping in the manner of the late Ricardo Vidort (Muma’s teaching partner for years). Transmitting the energy through centered chest connection and posture. “Walking the tango” – finding cadence, spirit and emotion of “tango“ in every step.

3-4.30 PM: MILONGA WITH TRASPIE: Learn how to change weight from side to side in the middle of a beat (or double-time); coordination and velocity changes; linked steps and figures; musical “feet-on-the-floor” embellishments.

SUNDAY October 17

1-2.30 PM: TANGO II- Integrated approach: Using the coordination learned with the milonga to step on every beat. Dance a lively “old school” tango without pauses (a signature characteristic of milonguero Ricardo Vidort). Respecting the navigation and the music “tempo” (speed).

3-4.30 PM: MILONGA II- Integrated approach: Learn a variety of Traspiés to enhance the texture of your dancing – alternating the “Milonga Lisa” (“Straight” or “Plain” milonga) with a “Compadrito” (street-wise and cool) style. Explore turns and counter-turns with traspie. Finding your own style in Tango and Milonga.
