Who is Hsueh-tze Lee?

Hsueh-tze [pronounced "shoo-tsee"] is celebrated across North America and internationally for her innovation and musicality. A life-long dancer, Hsueh-tze has been one of North America's pioneers in Argentine Tango since 1990. She draws inspiration from her extensive experience dancing with milongueros of Buenos Aires over many extended trips. Her dance blends the richness of tango tradition with exploratory possibilities.

Equally adept in both leading and following with 17 years of experience dancing both roles, Hsueh-tze is sought for her skills and insights. She has taught throughout the US, and also in Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico and Buenos Aires. In her classes, Hsueh-tze integrates her knowledge of dance, physiology and biomechanics to focus on movement quality, partner communication, musicality and improvisation. She imparts a dynamic and distinctive perspective to her students. Hsueh-tze hosts and DJs Blue Milonga, the popular second Saturday milonga in Boston.

Hsueh-tze holds a doctorate in physiology from Harvard University, and won a teaching award as a Harvard Teaching Fellow. Formerly a biology professor at Wellesley College, she now teaches tango full-time.

“My tango dancing history can easily be divided into 2 eras: the before Hsueh-tze era and the after Hsueh-tze era.
... I had been dancing for 18 month quite intensively in New York, taking a lot of classes and going out several times a week. .... after (a) few weeks taking classes with Hsueh-tze in Boston, I went back to New York to dance and what a surprise ! All my previous dance partners in New York were asking me: 'what happened to your tango, it has become so much finer?' That’s what I will always remember to myself as the 'Hsueh-tze effect.'
It is all about the quality of your social tango dancing.
I’m talking from a leader’s point of view but 'Hsueh-tze’s effect' also works its magic on followers.
Hsueh-tze’s secret is her unique blend of body mechanic understanding, true Buenos Aires tango dancing experience and her great skill at teaching. She has truly researched tango dancing & its teaching and she cares for you in her class like a good professor should.
" -- Jean-Michel Ledeur

"....I took a private lesson from (Hsueh-tze) during her last week in Buenos Aires. I have had tango explained through the traditional way, the old milongueros; I’ve had tango explained through the modern dance methodology; the nuevo dancers. But Hsueh Tze, with her extensive knowledge of physiology and biomechanics really helped clarify a lot of concepts. It related to me very much because I was a sportsman all my life. By pinpointing how the body muscular systems works, she could target the problem areas of my technique instantly.
To me, Hsueh Tze is unique. In her combination of sentiments and experience of the old guard, the modern and scientific teaching techniques. Topping it all off with a warm personality and genuine passion in the sharing of her knowledge.”
-- Isaac Ho, Teaching Assistant at Escuela Argentina de Tango, Buenos Aires

"I knew that I could see the world in a grain of sand, but not that it was possible to dance on one! It is truly remarkable how you create an entire world in the tiniest step and the softest weight shift.... Hsueh-tze, I believe your dancing calls for a nuevo grammar: subtle, subtler, Hsueh-tze.
"-- Katja, Denver

Argentine Tango with Francis & Emiko
JULY SCHEDULE

On SUNDAYS (ongoing), we host an open weekly practica from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. at El Centro Argentine Tango Dancing, located at Academie Duello, 422 Richards, Second Floor (at Hastings). Traditional music. No partner required. Refreshments served. $8 drop-in, $50 for 10 visits (no expiry, non-transferable), $5 drop-in for students (with student I.D.).

You will find street parking and several nearby Parkades. I recommend Pender & Seymour Parking as it costs $5 for the evening and you can cut through the hotel driveway straight to the Academie Duello entrance at 422 Richards. Avoid the parking at the Westin hotel, it's overpriced. Buses, Seabus and the Skytrain are all within a block. Click here to view a map.

Click here see photos of the building and its entrance. The studio is on the second floor.

On MONDAYS (ongoing), we have a regular intermediate class at 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm at The Atrium, 237 E. 4th Avenue. This is for dancers already comfortable walking in the close embrace. $18 drop-in/ $60 4-wk session. Please confirm in advance.

On WEDNESDAYS (new session begins July 2), we're teaching absolute beginners and dancers of all levels who wish to refine their fundamental skills, at 8:15 pm to 9:45 pm, at La Salle, 1839 Commercial Drive (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues). $18 drop-in/ $75 5-wk session. No partner required.
